Lewisville, TX: The death of her son was difficult for a mother in North Texas to express. To express how much it hurts and how helpless I feel, there are no words. The family of Kayla Gawalek is demanding answers for the failure to close the bridge due to ice.
On Saturday, Gawalek lost control of her pickup truck and drove straight into Lake Lewisville.
There were a lot of pointing fingers when CBS 11 News tried to find out who was responsible for the bridge and why it was open.
The Lake Lewisville Bridge falls under the jurisdiction of the Denton County Sheriff’s Office. Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) representatives have stated that the county of Denton must request the closure of the bridge before TxDOT will take action.
Since Kayla’s death in the accident, all her mother has are memories to hold onto. Isabel Gawalek reflected, “Kayla she always nice, giving, extremely friendly.” The mother reflects on her daughter and says she wants to remember the happy days.
“As I mentioned, wherever she went, she was able to quickly and easily make friends. One of her favorite things to do was fish.”
